Afghan villagers find the bodies of 6 beheaded contractors in restive southern province

By Associated Press, Published: November 17

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan villagers discovered the beheaded bodies of six government contractors Sunday in the country’s restive south, the apparent victims of insurgents who regularly target state projects, officials said.
Meanwhile, the death toll from a suicide car bombing at the site of a key national council in the capital, Kabul, rose to 12, officials said, as NATO said an international service member was killed by a roadside bomb.
Kandahar police spokesman Ahmed Durrani said villagers found the bodies. He said the men were involved in building police compounds and checkpoints in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The Taliban have previously targeted contractors, warning Afghans against working for the government.
The Taliban did, however, take credit for the blast Saturday outside the huge tent where the Loya Jirga consultative forum is to be held later this week in Kabul. Thousands of prominent Afghans are scheduled to meet there to debate a contentious security agreement with the United States.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said three of the 12 dead were members of Afghanistan’s National Security Force, with many of the rest civilians. The Taliban gave the bomber’s name as Saeed Kabuli, but provided few other details.
Hours before the blast, President Hamid Karzai announced that U.S. and Afghan negotiators had completed a final draft of the Bilateral Security Agreement to be presented to the gathering for debate. If approved, it would allow U.S. troops to stay in Afghanistan after the final withdrawal of international combat forces in 2014.
Also Sunday, NATO said a service member was killed in the south. It did not announce the nationality of the service member killed, though most troops serving in southern Afghanistan are from Britain and the United States.
So far this year, 139 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan, according to an Associated Press count. This compares to 394 troops of the NATO-led coalition killed in 2012.
Meanwhile in northern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber attacked the deputy governor of Balkh province. While the official escaped unhurt, one civilian was killed, Balkh police spokesman Sher Jan Durrani said.

Afghan doctor stoned for examining female patient without chaperone

A doctor was reportedly thrown from a balcony and stoned by an angry mob in Afghanistan for treating a female patient in an examining room without a chaperone.
It’s not clear whether Dr. Ajmeer Hashimi was killed or severely injured and sent out of Afghanistan for medical attention, Afghan officials told the New York Times.
The female patient is reportedly in good condition at a women’s shelter.
The assault occurred in Sar-i-Pul, a government-held town in the northern part of Afghanistan. There are conflicting reports on the incident, but the provincial police chief, Abdul Raouf Taj told the Times that local villagers stormed a private clinic when they heard the doctor was treating the woman-- a midwife named Mahboba-- alone in his exam room.
Police arrived to escort the doctor and patient out of the office but while the woman was protected from serious attack, Hashimi was thrown from a second-floor balcony into the outraged crowd below and stoned, according to Nabila Rahimi, a local legal affairs official.
In many parts of Afghanistan women are customarily not allowed to be examined by male doctors unless a close male family member is present. Stoning is the punishment for adultery under Shariah law.
Taj said there was no indication that the victims’ relationship was anything other than professional.
“It’s always hard for working women to stay in touch with male colleagues because most Afghans see them as sexual relations rather than work relations, and it’s all because of old traditions and a low level of education,” Taj said.
Hashimi was eventually rescued and taken to the Balkh General Hospital in Mazar-i-Sharif. But hospital officials said police told them he had been killed and Mahboba was missing. One hospital worker suggested that the police ordered hospital officials to lie and claim that both victims were being treated there.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution for violating those orders.
An official at the women’s shelter where Mahboba was recovering said she was in good condition. That official said she had been told that Hashimi survived the attack but was seriously injured and had been taken to India for treatment.
Both victims have spouses and Mahboba is the mother of two small children.

James Holmes: It Serves Him Right to Suffer

Jazz and Islam, Part 7

See last week’s part 6: The Questions Nobody Wants to Ask About ‘Moderate Islam’
The debate over James Holmes’s sanity has raged hotly ever since he murdered twelve people and wounded 58 in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in July 2012. But now the controversy can be laid to rest: Holmes is sane. The clearest indication of his sanity came last week, when the Daily Mail reported that he had converted to Islam.
The Mail reported that Holmes is apparently quite devout: he has grown a lavish beard, eats only halal food, prays the obligatory five daily prayers, and studies the Qur’an for hours every day.
Holmes’s conversion reveals that instead of being unaware of what he did, or utterly remorseless, as one might expect of a psychotic or a sociopath, the murders must trouble him a great deal. For it is souls that are troubled — intellectually, morally, spiritually, psychologically — who cast about for some solution to what troubles them, and often find it in religious conversion.
But it is what Holmes converted to that is significant. Had Holmes converted to Christianity, he might have found relief for any remorse he might be feeling for the massacre in the proposition that in Christ his sins, no matter how great, were forgiven; if he had explored Buddhism, he might have focused upon developing right intention, right speech, and right action, and eradicating the illusions that led him to kill in the first place.
Instead, Holmes chose Islam. A prison source noted: “He has brainwashed himself into believing he was on his own personal jihad and that his victims were infidels.”

This suggests that Holmes’s conversion is a defensive action against any regret that he may be feeling. But instead of meeting that regret with repentance, he has found a way to justify his actions. Instead of acknowledging his wrongdoing, he chose a belief system that justifies violence in certain circumstances, and has attempted to cleanse himself of any wrongdoing by seeing his murders in light of that belief system.
Jihad may take the form of indiscriminate mass murder of infidels, as we saw on 9/11, and 7/7, and in Beslan and Mumbai and Fort Hood and in so very, very many other places. Unfortunately for Holmes, however, jihad is not retroactive. If Holmes was an infidel at the time of the murders, then it doesn’t make his actions jihad to convert to Islam afterward.
Nonetheless, his conversion illustrates yet again why Islamic supremacist groups make such a concerted effort to make converts in prison. They know that men who are already in many cases notably aggressive and violent, and who have a grievance against society, are perfect fits for a religion that contains teachings that are themselves aggressive and violent, and that sets itself against infidel society. Islamic proselytizers in prisons hope to channel that aggression by sanctifying and thereby justifying it – as Holmes seems to be trying to justify his murders by affecting Islamic piety now.

But in reality, there is no justifying mass murder of innocent people, whether by invoking the religion whose holy book exhorts believers to “slay the polytheists wherever you find them” (Qur’an 9:5) or in any other way. If Holmes is really trying to excuse his murders by dismissing his victims as infidels, prison officials’ tolerance of his Islam is no more explicable than the military’s accommodation of the beard of Fort Hood jihad mass murderer Nidal Malik Hasan. Hasan maintained that he grew his beard in violation of Army regulations because he had a duty to do so as a devout Muslim; yet he also murdered thirteen people at Fort Hood out of the same sense of Islamic duty. Should murderers really be reinforced in the very ideology that they use to justify their murders?
If James Holmes is using Islam to justify murder, prison officials should make no allowances for his practice of Islam, any more than they should allow a white supremacist neo-Nazi prisoner to hold a Mein Kampf study group. If he has converted to Islam in order to short-circuit and eliminate any remorse he might be feeling for his murders, prison officials should give him a treat: a music break, consisting entirely of the title track from the notable bluesman John Lee Hooker’s sole and luminous album for the groundbreaking 1960s jazz label, Impulse Records: It Serves You Right to Suffer.
